Ferns striker Gabi Rennie signs first professional contract to join Finnish club

New Zealand international forward Gabi Rennie has signed for Åland United who play in the Kansallinen Liiga, Finland’s top women’s league.

Åland United are the club for whom Rennie’s Football Ferns teammate, Jacqui Hand, played in the 2022-23 season.

Christchurch-born Rennie (22) has been playing college football in the United States since 2020, with the Indiana Hoosiers and the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Rennie told the Åland United website: “It feels very exciting to start my professional career with Åland. I’m looking forward to starting this new chapter with this squad, and I’m especially looking forward to playing an offensive game!”

United’s head coach Riku Remes said: “She is in the starting blocks of her career and we believe this is a perfect start to her European adventure.

“Through her talent, speed and strength, Gabi will strengthen our attacking game.

“She has a good understanding of the game and poses a threat to the opposition even without the ball. She moves well and knows how to find open spaces in the opposition box.

“She will also look to create goalscoring opportunities for her teammates.

“Finally, I would like to say that it will be incredibly valuable to have a player with (Women’s World Cup) experience in our squad in 2024.”
