WATCH: All Whites striker Max Mata scores a double for Sligo Rovers

A return to League of Ireland club Sligo Rovers has sparked goalscoring form for New Zealand international Max Mata whose two goals have helped the side to a 5-0 win against Dundalk.

Mata (23) was loaned to Rovers in mid-February on a short-term deal by English League One outfit Shrewsbury Town who signed him in August 2023, paying an undisclosed fee to Sligo.

Mata had struggled for game time at Shrewsbury, and a change of manager saw him drop down the pecking order for selection.

Auckland-born Mata scored twice in Rovers’ midweek win at Dundalk, once either side of half-time.

Mata played his club football in New Zealand for Onehunga Sports, Eastern Suburbs and the Wellington Phoenix reserves, and made his All Whites debut in 2019.

Max Mata’s two goals capped a run of success for the Mata family, as brother Ben captained Wellington Olympic to victory in the New Zealand Charity Cup on Sunday, beating Christchurch United 3-0.
