Finals dream over for Wellington Phoenix women as A-League rivals win

posted in: A-League (Women), News

Hopes of reaching the women’s A-League finals for the first time are over for the Wellington Phoenix after rival teams Western Sydney and Newcastle Jets won their latest games.

Even if they win their two remaining games, the Phoenix can’t finish better than seventh on the table — one place below the cut-off for end-of-season finals.

The Nix needed Western Sydney and the Jets to falter in their Round 21 fixtures but Western Sydney beat Western United 3-1, and the Jets beat Melbourne Victory 3-2.

Meanwhile, Football Fern Hannah Wilkinson was among the scorers for Melbourne City who retained their lead on the table with a 3-0 win against the Central Coast Mariners.

The Phoenix play Canberra United in the Australian capital at 4pm (NZT) on Sunday.
