Out-of-contract Phoenix striker wins women’s A-League Player of Month award

Wellington Phoenix forward Marianna Speckmaier has been named the latest winner of the women’s A-League Player of the Month award.

Speckmaier (26) took the award for her efforts in March when she scored three goals in six matches, capping an impressive first season in the competition.

The Venezuelan international finished the Liberty A-League season with 10 goals and two assists in her 21 appearances for the Wellington Phoenix.

She finished equal fifth on the A-League Golden Boot table.

To win the award, Speckmaier was one of 10 players short-listed via analysis of the Opta index, a ratings system that matches data for many aspects of player performance.

She then won a fan vote held across A-League social media channels to become the first outfield player to win the award that had previously been dominated by goalkeepers.

Speckmaier’s future with the Phoenix has yet to be determined as she is out of contract.

However, she has indicated she wants to stay in New Zealand and would be keen to stay with the Nix.

In the April international window, she was a member of the Venezuela national squad that beat Panama 3-0 and 2-0 in a two-match series. She did not score in either game.
