WATCH: New Zealand teams in action at schools’ world cup tournament in China

Two New Zealand teams remain in contention to qualify from their group games at a schools world cup tournament in China.

Westlake Boys High School are competing in a 36-team boys tournament while Baradene College are one of 20 teams to contest the girls’ competition.

Westlake Boys beat Uganda 6-3 in their opening game, before losing 3-2 to England in their next group match.

Baradene lost 6-0 to China in their opener, before beating Morocco 2-1 in the second group game.

Baradene’s match against Bangladesh will be live streamed on Tuesday May 21 at 1pm (NZT).

Both Auckland schools are representing New Zealand at the International School Sport Federation (ISF) Football World Cup in Dalian, China, which finishes on May 28, 2024.

The tournament is a new event originating from ISF World School Championships which have been held since 1972, and will bring together teams from around the world.

In 2023, Westlake won four titles, including the national secondary schools’ premier tournament which led to the invitation to the cup event in China.

Baradene won the girls’ premier NZ Secondary Schools tournament.

The venue

The tournament is being staged in the Chinese coastal city of Dalian. which has a population of 7.5 million.

The venues for the tournament include the Dalian Suoyuwan Football Stadium, the Dalian Sports Centre and the Dalian Football Youth Training Base.
