Here are our picks for the weekend’s most entertaining games

posted in: News

We’re throwing the net wide in our efforts to identify the most entertaining games for Northern fans this weekend.

We’ve sorted some options out for all points of the Auckland compass, plus a cracker of a game in Hamilton.

For the neutrals

If you’re looking for the games we’re picking to be the most entertaining, we suggest the following for football fans in the North:

Friday

What a way to start the weekend – Auckland City will host Northern Rovers under lights at 7.30pm.

City appear to have the Northern League title at their mercy but will they slip up in the different atmosphere of night football?

Saturday

In the Northern League, one game stands out – the Hamilton derby between Wanderers and Melville United at Porritt Stadium (3pm).

Recent outings between these two clubs have been tense, to say the least, and spectators are sure to witness all that goes with fierce rivalry.

In Auckland, we recommend a trip to Waitemata’s McLeod Park to take a look at the Lotto NRFL Division 1 leaders Waiheke United.

The islanders are in full flight this year and it’s not out of the question to imagine Northern League football – National League football, even – being a ferry ride away in a year or two.

In Division 2, table toppers Onehunga Mangere United travel to Franklin United (3pm). It’s our pick for the game likely to produce the most goals.

Sunday

Division 1 high flyers Albany United host Manurewa at Rosedale Park (3pm), if you’re looking for men’s football.

Fans of the women’s game have three games to pick from (unless you’re up for a mad dash between games in which you could take in most of two fixtures).

Eastern Suburbs play leaders Western Springs (1pm); Auckland United host Hamilton Wanderers (1pm); Ellerslie play Northern Rovers (3pm).
