Hundreds benefit from Friends of Football-sponsored Hungerball action

Hundreds of children and young adults got the chance to experience the fun of football at Auckland’s Football for Freedom day, hosted by Manukau United.

United worked with partners Hungerball to make available their inflatable playing arena, sponsored by Friends of Football, throughout a one-day cultural and football event on Saturday January 22, 2022.

The club hosted a seven-a-side tournament for mixed teams at their Walter Massey Park grounds, and encouraged visitors to “have a go” in the Hungerball arena.

The non-profit event was held to help children who are former refugees in Gaza.

Organisers say their event aimed “to connect people together through the beautiful game of Football. We also aim to raise awareness for refugees and practical support for former refugees in Aotearoa and Palestinian people in Gaza.

The day included a Palestinian Cultural festival to celebrate the Palestinian food, culture and heritage.

Manukau United’s Hungerball programme is part-funded by Friends of Football’s Helping Hands Fund.
