Springs gain on Women’s Premier League leaders with 2-1 win at Tauranga City

posted in: News

Western Suburbs made ground on leaders Northern Rovers with a 2-1 win in the Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier League against bottom-placed Tauranga City.

Tauranga opened the scoring at their Links Ave ground after seven minutes through Michelle Windsor.

Sofia Garcia levelled for Western Springs after 19 minutes, her fourth goal of the season.

The teams went into half-time locked at 1-1.

The winner came from 17-year-old substitute Lola Wood who came on in the 67th minute and scored her first goal of the season after being on the pitch for seven minutes.

The win puts pressure on leaders Northern Rovers to win their Sunday game to keep their three-point margin over Springs.

For Tauranga, who have conceded 40 goals in their first season at this level, the scoreline provided some evidence they can match teams in the WPL.
