Top two teams heading for WPL title showdown as Rovers and United keep winning

posted in: News

Northern Rovers and Auckland United both furthered their claims for the Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier League title with wins in the latest round of competition.

Having played one game fewer than their nearest chasers, the two Auckland sides are heading for a title showdown when they eventually meet next in August.

Here’s our round-up of latest games:

Henson double powers Rovers to win at Rangers

A second-half double from former Leicester City player Shannon Henson powered Northern Rovers to a 3-0 win at West Coast Rangers’ Huapai Domain.

The win keeps Rovers in pole position to take this year’s WPL title, as they as they don’t have a sudden slip in form.

Estelle Harrison gave Rovers the lead after 21 minutes, and the league leaders took their 1-0 advantage into half-time.

In the second spell, Henson scored Rovers’ second goal in the 67th minute and then finished off the match with another just before full-time.

United continue to stalk league leaders after win in Hamilton

Auckland United’s 4-1 win at Hamilton Wanderers ensures the side continues to stalk leaders Northern Rovers.

United got off to a strong start, scoring twice in the opening 20 minutes at Porritt Stadium.

Ruby Nathan continued her goalscoring form, netting after eight minutes, before United doubled their lead on 20 minutes through an own goal credited to Caitlin Byrne.

Turning around 2-0 down, Wanderers briefly gave themselves a lifeline when international striker Helen Arjomandi pulled back a goal in the 59th minute.

But two minutes later, United’s leading goalscorer Tessa Leong scored her seventh of the season to restore the two-goal lead.

Nathan made sure of the victory with her second of the day, scored after 79 minutes.

Improving Suburbs beat Ellerslie 4-0

Watch the full replay of Suburbs’ win here:

Eastern Suburbs continue to show improvement and cruised to a 4-0 win against Ellerslie at Madills Farm.

Deven Jackson opened the scoring for the Lilywhites in the 14th minute.

Juliette Lucas scored Suburbs’ second after 24 minutes, and the sides went into the break at 2-0.

The result was effectively wrapped up when Suburbs scored two more in a three-minute spell.

Captain Rebekah Van Dort made it 3-0 in the 54th minute before Lucas added her second goal three minutes later.

Suburbs are in fourth place on the table, still within range of the top three, but they’ll need to beat all their top-of-the-table rivals and rely on other results to go their way if they want to retain any hopes of retaining their title.
