Western Springs’ title hopes stay alive after Friday win in Women’s Premier League

posted in: News

Western Springs have moved within three points of leaders Northern Rovers after a 3-1 win against Auckland United in the Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier League.

Playing on Friday afternoon of the Matariki holiday at Crum Park, Springs took an early lead through Rina Hirano whose 14th-minute header gave them a 1-0 half-time lead.

In the 65th minute, United drew level when Stella Lawson crossed for Bree Johnson to score.

However, Springs took control of the game in a three-minute spell.

First, Sofia Garcia put them in front with her fifth of the season, in the 71st minute.

Then Lara Colpi finished the job with Springs’ third in the 74th minute.

While Rovers remain three points clear — and, importantly, have two games in hand — Springs have emerged as the only realistic threat to their title claims.
