Goalkeeper Victoria Esson is latest Football Fern to sign for a Scottish club

Football Ferns goalkeeper Victoria Esson has signed with Scottish Women’s Premier League champions Rangers.

The 31-year-old keep moves to Scotland after playing with German Bundesliga side SC Sand and Norwegian side Avaldsnes.

The Christchurch-born goalkeeper is the latest Fern to sign with a Scottish club.

Defender Meekayla Moore signed for Rangers’ rivals Glasgow City while striker Katie Rood has joined Edinburgh club Hearts.

New Zealand teammate Olivia Chance also plays for Celtic.

Esson, who played her club football for Coastal Spirit and North Shore United in New Zealand, was part of the national squad at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Of her move to Rangers, she told the club’s website: “I am so excited to be here, it has been a couple of days now and everyone has been really welcoming.

“The Scottish League is an up-and-coming league, it is closing the gap on England and there are some fantastic players who play in the league so I think it is a great opportunity for me and I’m really excited.”

Head coach Malky Thomson said: “We are delighted to welcome Victoria to the club as we continue to strengthen the squad ahead of an exciting season.

“She is an experienced player who will further drive the competition within our squad which will be important as we look to build on last season’s success.”
