Albany United climb above Waitemata in bid to avoid first division’s wooden spoon

posted in: News

Albany United have moved off the bottom of the Lotto NRFL first division table with a 2-1 win against Onehunga Mangere United.

While the result still leaves Albany relegation-bound, it at least gives the side a chance of avoiding the division’s wooden spoon, following Waitemata’s 6-0 defeat by Metro on Saturday.

Albany worked their way into a winning position with a first half in which they took a 2-0 lead at Rosedale Park.

James Chamberlain-Barlow got the first, in the 17th minute, and captain Jack Beguely added another as the half went into added time.

Gilberto Souza pulled back a goal for Onehunga Mangere in the 54th minute but the home side’s defence was resolute for the rest of the match, and Albany’s three points ensured their move into 11th place.

Referee Yunjie Diao issued eight yellow cards — five to Albany, three to the visitors.
