Otumoetai lands Sports Club of the Year award for Bay of Plenty

Otumoetai FC have been named Bay of Plenty Sports Club of the Year at the annual Forsyth Barr Sports Awards.

The club won accolades for its performance on and off the pitch at the awards dinner held in Rotorua.

This year, Otumoetai had 10 senior teams competing in six divisions across the WaiBOP region, and achieved a first or second placing in four of its competitions.

The club won the W-League, the Bay 2 Men’s Division, the Miller Cup and the Miller Bowl. Its men’s first and second teams both came second in their competitions.

In the award citation, Sport BoP said: “The club continues to grow with a 10 per cent increase in membership and now employs two full-time and one part-time staff member. The club has upgraded equipment, playing kit and facilities with the help of the community.”

Tauranga Boys’ College wins team award

At the same awards function, Tauranga Boys’ College first XI was named the region’s Secondary School Boys’ Team of the Year.

“The team had a fantastic year taking out the New Zealand Secondary School football championship by winning all seven games,” the award citation reads.

“The team are also New Zealand Super 8 Champions, unbeaten in interschool fixtures. Four members of the team were named in the New Zealand U19 squad.”
