It was only seven-a-side, and it was organised to end the winter football season with a bit of fun … but maybe, just maybe, the result of Mt Albert Ponsonby’s World Cup Sevens might be an omen for England fans.
The club’s one-day tournament was won by ‘England’ who beat ‘Argentina’ 2-1 in the final game, with new first-team coach Darren White scoring the winner to take the treasured club trophy.
The day finished well for the ‘England’ side, despite starting the tournament with a first-round loss to the ‘Nederlands’.
The real England plays Wales on Wednesday (8am NZT) needing a win, draw or to not lose by more than four goals to go through to the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup.
