Football Ferns striker Emma Rolston says the cause of her back injury remains a mystery three weeks after leaving the pitch distressed when playing against South Korea.

“I couldn’t move properly. I couldn’t run,” she said. “I just couldn’t move at all.”

Since the November 12 injury, physio and coaching staff at the Wellington Phoenix and Ferns have been co-ordinating their efforts to help Rolston recover.

She has missed the two opening Phoenix fixtures in the women’s A-League but hopes to be with the squad for Sunday’s match away to Melbourne Victory.

“Obviously my goal is to be playing this weekend if possible; if not this weekend, definitely next weekend,” she said at a midweek media conference.

“I would love to be out on the field and make my debut for the Phoenix.”

Rolston said she suffered a similar injury about three years ago but still has no clarity as to its cause.

“I thought I’d broken my back,” she said.
