New Zealand international James McGarry has joined the Central Coast Mariners for the rest of the men’s A-League season.

The 24-year-old left back leaves the Newcastle Jets in a swap deal finalised hours before the closure of the transfer deadline at midnight on Wednesday.

Heading in the opposite direction is Thomas Aquilina.

Mariners head coach Nick Montgomery said:

“James is a player that I have liked for a long time, and I think he will give us a great balance in the squad.

“He has a brilliant left foot and is extremely versatile, having the ability to play as a fullback, winger or in the midfield.

“James has played overseas and has played international football which I think will add even more experience to our young squad.”

McGarry has represented New Zealand at U-17, U-20 and U-23 level, and played one game for the All Whites, against Lithuania in November 2019.

He played 40 times for the Wellington Phoenix, in two spells, before joining the Jets last year.
