Emerging national players look set to join Eastern Suburbs for Northern League season

Northern League club Eastern Suburbs appear to have signed two of New Zealand’s best up-and-coming players ahead of the coming season.

In naming the national U-20 men’s squad to play at a four-nation tournament in Indonesia, New Zealand Football have listed striker Adam Supyk and midfielder Josh Gallety as Eastern Suburbs players.

That indicates the pair will play for the Lilywhites when they return to New Zealand after the PSSI Invitational tournament, when it finishes on February 22.

Supyk (18) has previously played for Lower Hutt City and the Wellington Phoenix reserves.

He was a member of the successful New Zealand team that won the OFC U-19 Championship in September, earning qualification to the FIFA U-20 World Cup to be held in Indonesia.

Gallety (19) has trained with the national U-17 and U-20 squads before but his inclusion in the squad playing in Jakarta is his break into the national side.

He was with Melville United last season and left the Waikato club at season’s end for a trial with Melbourne City’s youth set-up. Gallety was with the Wellington Phoenix academy in 2019-20.

If Supyk and Gallety are confirmed as Suburbs players, it will mean the club has five U-20 internationals.

Others are goalkeeper Joe Knowles, who was in the title-winning U-19 national team, Aaryan Raj and Jackson Jarvie.

This might create mid-season issues for the Lilywhites’ Northern League plans if this group are all selected for the U-20 World Cup which will take place from May 20 to June 11.
