FIFA Women’s World Cup quarter-finalists confirmed for Auckland and Wellington

A drama-laden penalty shootout has determined that Sweden will play Japan at Auckland’s Eden Park on Friday, and not the world champion United States.

After the sides were tied 0-0 in Melbourne, Sweden and the United States faced off in a penalty shootout, won when goalline technology helped prove a Swedish spot kick had crossed the line, despite the efforts of goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher.

The Netherlands’ 2-0 win against South Africa means they will face Spain in the quarter-final at Wellington’s Sky Stadium in the lunchtime match on Friday.
