A match at Papatoetoe’s Murdoch Park on Saturday will mark the 20th anniversary of a trophy named after New Zealand’s most celebrated player, Wynton Rufer.

The Wynton Rufer Shield will be contested between the NZ Crosswhites and the CFL Reps, kicking off at 2pm.

Rufer, who was named Oceania Footballer of the Century by the Oceania Football Confederation, was a member of the 1982 All Whites, the first national side to reach the finals of the FIFA World Cup.

In 2003, the first time the match was held between the SoccerPlusNZ Crosswhites and CFL (Christian Football League), Rufer scored for both sides.

He found the net for the CFL in the first half, swapped sides at half-time, and then scored a double for the SoccerPlusNZ side in the second half, to give them a 7-3 victory.

Of the nine games played for the Wynton Rufer Shield, SoccerPlusNZ have won five, CFL have won four and there’s been only one draw (2005).
