Iran led 2-0 at the break, despite missing a penalty, and New Caledonia rallied to have five attempts on goal, one of which was on target.

The Oceania side conceded twice in stoppage time to give Iran a 5-0 win and likely progression to the Round of 16 as one of the best-performing third-placed teams.

Meanwhile, New Zealand play Mexico in their final group game on Saturday night (10pm NZT).

New Zealand must win and have other results go their way to progress to the knockout stages.
