Relegated West Auckland appoint Jonny Aalbers as coach for next season

Newly-appointed coach Jonny Aalbers says he sees West Auckland’s relegation from the Lotto NRFL Northern Conference as an opportunity to rebuild the squad.

“I’m not naive to the burden relegation will bring but rather amongst it, I see the opportunity to rebuild a squad with a truly solid foundation,” Aalbers has told the club’s supporters through its social media.

“I’m excited for the year, and I can’t wait to get into it.”

Aalbers (35) has been named as West Auckland’s first team men’s coach, taking over from Dan Menzies. He joined West Auckland as a player for the 2023 season after a long spell at Waitemata.

In its announcement, West Auckland says: “Jonny comes with a wealth of experience as both a player and coach and will be looking to lead a successful campaign through the 2024 season.”

The club has thanked outgoing coach Menzies.

“We wish him all the best for his journey over the coming years,” the club said.

West Auckland finished second bottom in the 2023 Northern Conference, one of three clubs tied on points and separated only by goal difference.
