Title-winning Graeme Smaill to lead Dunedin City Royals in new season

Dunedin City Royals have appointed title-winning Graeme Smaill as their women’s first team coach for 2024.

Smaill (61) has had considerable success with Dunedin teams in the past and will lead the Royals into their Football South Women’s Premier League campaign, which they won last season.

In 2022, Smaill’s coaching career was disrupted after he was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition that affected his muscles. He cut short his season, giving up the head coaching role with Women’s National League side Southern United, while he began a course of steroid treatment.

In 2023, he resumed coaching, acting as an assistant with men’s and women’s teams at the Royals, and helping Southern United reach the grand final of the Women’s National League.
