He takes over the men’s first team role from Scott Robson (35) who is taking a break from coaching to focus on his studies.

Announcing the changes, Palmerston North United said: “We are extremely fortunate to have another top-level coach picking up where Scott Robson left off last season.

“We’re pleased to confirm that Scott will remain with the club, in the newly created role of Football Liaison Officer. He’ll be acting as an ambassador for the club, focusing on community engagement, as well as helping out in the academy and supporting our coaches in the senior men’s and women’s environment.”

Piper said: “I’m excited for the opportunity to lead the side this season.

“The coaching and playing group of 2023 put down solid foundations on the back of a hugely successful inaugural season.

“I’ll look to build on this and continue to weave United into the footballing fabric of Manawatu. Pre-season’s just days away and I can’t wait to get on the grass and get at it.”

Meanwhile, Ben Mitchell has returned for a second season as head coach of United’s women’s team.
