Lee Smith departs Central Football for full-time role at Gisborne Thistle

Gisborne Thistle have appointed Lee Smith as the club’s full-time director of football.

Smith (40) starts the role after leaving Central Football on February 16, 2024, where he was the community development officer of Gisborne/Tairāwhiti, a role he held since July 2021.

Originally from the United Kingdom, Smith has extensive coaching and player development experience.

Announcing his departure from the federation role, Central Football said: “Lee has been an invaluable member of the Central Football team for the past two and a half years, and during this time, he has made significant contributions to our organization and to the Gisborne/Tairāwhiti Region in particular.

“His work around developing players and coaches along with the excellent work he did over the past 12 months further up the East Coast are an example of Lee’s impact on the region.”

Of his appointment with Gisborne Thistle, Central Football said: “We have no doubt that he will bring his expertise and enthusiasm to making a positive impact on the club. We are lucky that he will remain an important part of the game in the region.”

Smith joins Gisborne Thistle in their centenary year.
