Phoenix move closer to learning who’ll they meet in men’s A-League semi-finals

posted in: A-League (Men), News

The Wellington Phoenix will play either Sydney or Melbourne Victory in their two-legged men’s A-League semi-final.

This follows Sydney’s 4-0 victory against Macarthur in the first elimination final on Saturday night.

Sydney’s win was made easier by the 27th-minute red card given to Macarthur defender Kealey Adamson, forcing the Bulls to play more than an hour with 10 men.

The loss ended the season for Macarthur’s All Whites Clayton Lewis and Tommy Smith.

Phoenix fans now have to wait till Sunday evening for the result of the second elimination final, between Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City.

If Victory win, they’ll play the Phoenix in the semi-final as they’ll be the highest-ranked of the elimination final winners, having come third in the regular season.

If Melbourne City win that game, the Phoenix will play the Ufuk Talay-coached Sydney because they were the fourth-ranked team, while City finished sixth.

While the Phoenix are destined to meet the highest-ranked qualifier, Premier Plate winners Central Coast Mariners will meet the lowest-ranked of those clubs.
