Manurewa emerge as first division title chasers after big win at Albany

posted in: News

Manurewa have emerged as the only team with a realistic chance of catching Lotto NRFL first division leaders West Coast Rangers.

The in-form Rewa travelled to Rosedale Park but made easy meat of Albany United, beating them 5-1.

Albany gave Manurewa an early advantage when captain Thomas Davis was given a straight red card after 15 minutes for using his hand to deny the visitors a goalscoring opportunity.

Despite being down to 10 men, Albany more than kept their own for the first-half and actually went ahead with a goal from Thomson Nkoy as the 45–minute mark came up.

However, in the second-half, Manurewa gradually made the most of their numerical advantage, levelling from the penalty spot through Monty Patterson in the 63rd minute.

Mohammed Nabeel then rattled home two goals, in the 75th and 84th minutes, for Rewa to go 3-1 up.

Skipper Agustin Contratti added Manurewa’s fourth in the 86th minute and Patterson grabbed his second of the day in added time.

Manurewa now trail Rangers by six points but have a five-point break on third-placed Tauranga.

If Manurewa can beat Rangers when they meet, and the leaders have a blip in their form … well, anything’s still possible in this title race.
