Rovers benefit from Eastern Suburbs’ win in latest Women’s Premier League games

posted in: News

Northern Rovers are turning this year’s Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier League into a procession after establishing a six-point lead at the top of the table, and with a game in hand on their nearest rivals.

Rovers beat Ellerslie 2-0 in their latest game while challengers Auckland United lost ground, slipping to third after a loss to Eastern Suburbs.

Here’s our round-up of latest games:

Northern Rovers hold on to league lead with 2-0 win at Ellerslie

A goal in each half ensured Northern Rovers kept top spot in the WPL as they overcame Ellerslie at Michaels Ave.

Captain Talisha Green put Rovers in front on the half-hour, and that’s how the score remained at half-time.

In the second spell, Michaela Foster scored her sixth goal of the season to effectively make sure of the win.

With the best defence in the competition, there was little chance of Rovers surrendering a two-goal lead and as every week goes by, the more the title looks like it’s Rover’s to lose.

Springs lead the chase to catch Rovers

Western Springs continue to lead the chase to catch league leaders Northern Rovers after beating Hamilton Wanderers 3-0 at Crum Park.

Sophia Dyer opened the scoring for Springs in the 20th minute.

Five minutes later, Lily Taitimu doubled the home side’s lead, and Springs took that scoreline into the break.

Wanderers kept Springs at bay for almost the second spell, conceding the third goal a minute from time when substitute Celia Mayo found the net.

The result keeps Springs in second place on the table, while Wanderers are uncomfortably level on points with bottom-placed Tauranga City.

Jackson double gets Suburbs a come-from-behind win against United

Eastern Suburbs continued to improve their league position with a valuable 3-2 win against Auckland United at Madills Farm.

The Lilywhites took the lead in the 13th minute when Aimee Atkins took a short corner, received the ball back and then swung a looping ball over the head of goalkeeper Aimee Feinberg-Danieli from 20 metres out.

As it looked as though Suburbs would go into half-time a goal up, United levelled in added time through former Football Fern Martine Puketapu when she reacted quickest to a long ball into the box, turning it into the net from close range.

United took the lead early in the second half through captain Jess Philpot.

Then, Suburbs turned the game with a double from Deven Jackson, her first in the 58th minute and her second in the 71st minute.
