Tough group for New Zealand as draw made for U-17 Women’s World Cup

New Zealand will play Germany, Nigeria and Chile in their group at October’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup tournament in India.

This follows the draw made for the tournament at FIFA’s Zurich headquarters by All Whites legend Ricki Herbert and former United States footballer Heather O’Reilly.

O’Reilly drew the names of the 16 participating nations from four pots while Herbert randomly selected which groups the teams would play in.

The draw set up an intriguing opening match between host nation India and the United States to be played on October 11, 2022.

Group A

India, United States, Morocco, Brazil

Group B

Germany, Nigeria, Chile, New Zealand

Group C

Spain, Columbia, Mexico, China

Group D

Japan, Tanzania, Canada, France

Herbert’s busy week in Zurich

Taking part in the U-17 World Cup draw capped a busy week in Zurich for former All Whites player and coach Ricki Herbert.

He has been taking part in a FIFA programme, called The Next 90, designed to help develop the skills of former international players for their continuing careers, whether those are football-related or in other industries.
