Waikato to host special event to mark a year to go for FIFA Women’s World Cup

Football enthusiasts are invited to Hamilton’s FMG Stadium on Wednesday July 20 to mark the one-year countdown to the opening of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The stadium is one of four New Zealand venues for games at the 32-team tournament to be co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia.

To give fans a taste of what’s to come, host city Hamilton will host an evening of football activities under the floodlights at FMG Stadium on July 20 — exactly a year before the tournament’s opening ceremony at Auckland’s Eden Park.

Stadium gates will open at 4pm (entry through Gate 4) and here’s the schedule for an evening of entertainment:

  • Juniors – an opportunity for some U6, U8, U10 and U13 teams to play on the very same grounds WWC teams will be playing on at FMG Stadium under lights. Kick-off 4.30pm.
  • Youth – an opportunity for WaiBOP Football’s RTC (Regional Training Centre) U-17 girls to be mixed with celebrities from the Waikato/Bay of Plenty region in a 2 x 15 min game. Kick-off 5.15pm.
  • Women – WaiBOP Legacy Cup Game. The best females from the Waikato vs the best from the Bay of Plenty region will play off in a 2 x 20 min game. Kick-off 6.00pm.
