Eastern Suburbs dominant in Women’s Premier League win against Tauranga

posted in: News

Eastern Suburbs overran Tauranga City 7-1 in their Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier League game at Madills Farm.

The result, and the manner in which it was achieved, confirms the Lilywhites as the competition’s biggest goalscorers, with 68 goals — 19 more than the next best in the league.

Suburbs dominated possession and territory almost from the start but struggled to convert this into goalscoring chances until they earned a series of corners midway through the first half.

That’s when the Suburbs thirst for goals kicked in.

In the 19th minute, Juliette Lucas got enough head contact to an inswinging corner to glance it into the net.

Four minutes later, the Lilywhites patiently built from the back, leading to left wing back Aimee Atkins belting home a low shot from an angle.

In the 34th minute, the always-dangerous Jade Parris reacted quickest when Tayla O’Brien crossed into the box, turning the ball home.

The sides turned around with Suburbs comfortably in front at 3-0.

In the second spell, Tauranga had their brightest period in the match, culminating in an excellent goal by Adi-grace Mooar in the 68th minute when she tore down the right wing, cut back inside and hooked the ball over the ‘keeper.

In the 71st minute, Tayla O’Brien scored with a firm strike from 10 metres.

She added her second goal a few minutes later, with another well-struck shot.

With six minutes left, Annie Byrne extended the Suburbs lead to 6-1 when she ran through the flat-footed Tauranga defence and poked the ball home.

Substitute Saki Yoshida finished the rout with a back post header with two minutes to go.
