All Whites midfielder Matt Garbett lands two-year deal with Dutch club

All Whites midfielder Matthew Garbett has signed a two-year deal with second-tier Dutch outfit NAC Breda after impressing during his loan spell at the club.

Breda also have an option to extend Garbett’s contract for a third year.

Garbett (21) had been loaned to Breda in late January by parent club Torino, who play in Italy’s Serie A, helping him build his fitness after a minor injury.

Breda technical director Peter Maas said: “We see Matthew as one of the dynamic midfielders who are now knocking on our door and who also have a lot of room to stretch.”

Garbett said: “I am really enjoying myself in Breda and at the club. In the coming years, I hope to develop myself further at NAC and to be of value to the team.”

Garbett’s move from Italy to the Netherlands is made easier because he has a French passport and falls outside of the non-EU football work scheme.

Garbett grew up in Wellington and made his senior debut for Western Suburbs.

After spells with Eastern Suburbs and Team Wellington, he joined Swedish club Falkenbergs FF.

He signed for Torino after impressing at the Tokyo Olympics, and he became a key part of the All Whites line-up during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
