Wanderers present tough challenge for Suburbs in Women’s Premier League

By Joan Grey

We’re nearing the halfway point in the Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier League competition, and this weekend marks the end of the first of two round-robins.

The Round 7 fixtures consist of only three games — all scheduled for Sunday — after the postponement of Friday night’s match between Western Springs and leaders Auckland United.

Game of the week

Eastern Suburbs travel to the Tron to take on Hamilton Wanderers this weekend.

With Suburbs vying for the top position on the ladder, every point is crucial to overtake Auckland United.

Suburbs are in impressive form with three wins on the trot and they hold the second position on the table.

During their last three triumphant matches, the Lilywhites scored three goals in each game while conceding just a single goal across those games.

Their opponents, Hamilton Wanderers, stand as tough contenders in the competition, positioned among the top teams. Notably, they have maintained an unbeaten record on home territory in Hamilton.

Expect a hard-fought contest between two highly-skilled sides at Porritt Stadium.

Player to watch

Eastern Suburbs have added goalkeeper Ella Hunkin (25) to their ranks.

Hunkin brings valuable experience from playing for Southampton in the UK, where she played alongside Football Ferns Ashleigh Ward and Katie Rood. She has also played for Reading and Queen’s Park Rangers.

She’ll certainly strengthen the Suburbs squad.
