Eastern Suburbs eye historic double after extra time win in Chatham Cup

Auckland’s Eastern Suburbs are on track for a tilt at an historic Chatham Cup and Kate Sheppard Cup double.

No club has ever won both trophies in the same season but the Lilywhites have reached the semi-finals of this year’s competitions.

Suburbs men secured their spot in the Chatham Cup’s last four with a 3-2 extra-time win against Wellington Olympic on Saturday.

The Suburbs women’s team play Wellington United in mid-August for a place in this year’s Kate Sheppard Cup final.

Eastern Suburbs have won the Chatham Cup six times, the last time in 2015, and were beaten finalists (by Auckland City) last year.

The club has won the Kate Sheppard Cup once, in 2019.

Suburbs’ name will go into the Chatham Cup semi-final draw with those of Melville United, Waterside Karori and Christchurch United.

Melville have never won the cup before but were runners-up in 2003 and 2019.

As Waterside, Wellington’s Waterside Karori have won the cup four times (1938, 1939, 1940, 1947).

If Christchurch United can lift this year’s cup, they will have won it a record eight times.

They currently share the honour of the most cup wins with University-Mount Wellington.
