PREVIEW: Futsal Ferns to play Philippines for place in tournament final

posted in: Futsal, News

New Zealand’s Futsal Ferns will play hosts the Philippines twice this weekend at the PFF Tri-Nation Invitational Tournament in Manila.

The first game, on Friday, will decide who finishes second and third in the group stage of the tournament, and a day later, the two sides will meet again for the right to face Indonesia in Sunday’s final.

Indonesia have already secured their spot in the final with wins against New Zealand (3-1) and the Philippines (9-4).

Friday’s game will be live-streamed by the Philippine Football Federation via the PFF Facebook page.

It kicks off at 11pm (NZT).

The tournament provides New Zealand with the first step in their campaign to qualify for the inaugural 2025 FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup.

The Oceania region will be allocated one place at the World Cup and while the qualification process has yet to be confirmed, it’s likely to mirror the pathway for the 2024 FIFA Futsal Men’s World Cup.

The Philippines are led by veteran futsal coach Victor Hermans (70), a Dutch pioneer of the format who has been head coach of seven national teams — Malaysia, Iran, Netherlands, Malta, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. He’s taken three teams to FIFA Futsal Men’s World Cups.
