Alex King wins top award and will referee men’s A-League grand final

Alex King has been named Referee of the Year for the 2023-24 men’s A-League season.

This is the second time that Queenslander King has won the award, having first won the award in 2021-22.

The award adds to what has been a wonderful career for Alex who has featured in the A-Leagues since 2014.

King has officiated at a domestic and international level and has featured in the A-Leagues since 2014.

A member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Referee Academy from 2018 to 2022, King has officiated abroad at the 2022 AFC Cup Final in Kuala Lumpur as an assistant VAR and at the 2022 and 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cups as an on-field referee.

King has also been acknowledged for his outstanding 2023-24 season by being selected to referee the 2024 Isuzu UTE A-League grand final on Saturday May 25, with Kearney Robinson and Brad Wright as his assistants.

Getting to know Alex King

The Isuzu UTE A-League Men Referee of the Year is awarded to the referee judged as the best referee for the regular season by Football Australia head of referees Nathan Magill and A-Leagues commissioner, Nick Garcia.

Garcia said: “Alex has set the standard for referees in the Isuzu UTE A-League Men and is no doubt inspiring a number of junior referees around Australia and New Zealand to follow in his footsteps.

“We congratulate Alex on a standout season of refereeing and his second Referee of the Year award. We look forward to having him officiate the Isuzu UTE A-League Men grand final this weekend.”

Magill said: “The selection of Saturday’s Isuzu UTE A-League Men’s Grand Final officiating team is acknowledgment of their consistent performances throughout this season, particularly for Alex, who has had an exceptional twelve months.

“King has been an integral part of the A-League match officiating panel for a decade and has continuously shown his ability to perform in the important matches in Isuzu UTE A-League Men. It is only appropriate that Alex has been named the Isuzu UTE A-League Men Referee of the Year for a second time, highlighting his skill and professionalism.

“Football Australia along with the referees committee would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to the entire A-Leagues match officials panel for their commitment and professionalism throughout the 2023-24 season and wish those appointed for Saturday’s Grand Final all the best of luck with the occasion.”

King will be presented with his award at the conclusion of the grand final.
