Third round draw decides fates of last 32 clubs in Chatham Cup

posted in: Chatham Cup, News

The 32 remaining clubs in the 2024 Chatham Cup have learned their opponents in the third round of New Zealand’s oldest club cup competition.

The draw for the 16 fixtures has been made by NZ Football with fixtures due to be played over the weekend of June 14-16, 2024.

Features of the draw:

  • The draw has produced three ties pitching Northern League clubs against each other.
  • Five-time winners Central United (1997, 1998, 2005, 2007, 2012) will host dual cup winners Birkenhead United (2016, 2018).
  • Lotto NRFL Southern Conference club Cambridge have never progressed beyond the third round despite reaching it 12 times before. Their 13th attempt comes this year with a trip to Northern League side Bay Olympic.
  • At least two clubs from outside the Northern League will reach the last 16, with Ellerslie meeting Onehunga Mangere United (both Lotto NRFL Championship), and Championship club Hibiscus Coast hosting Southern Conference side Taupo.
  • The two leading Central League clubs, Wellington Olympic and Western Suburbs, will face each other.
  • All eight sides left in the Central region are Central League clubs (the only teams not to reach the third round are the Wellington Phoenix and Island Bay United).
  • Giantkillers FC Nelson who upset Southern League side Nelson Suburbs in round 2 will host another Southern League club, Ferrymead Bays.
  • Coastal Spirit’s reward for knocking out holders Christchurch United is a home tie against Nomads United, who eliminated 2021 holders Cashmere Technical.
  • At least one club from outside the Southern League will represent the South Island in the last 16, with Northern facing Otago University in the third round.
