Indian Super League club Mumbai City are being tipped to reunite Wellington Phoenix strike partners Roy Krishna and David Williams.
Mumbai, whose head coach is former Phoenix and New Zealand U-20 coach Des Buckingham, have already signed Williams after his departure from ATK Mohun Bagan.
Now, with Krishna’s contract with Mohun Bagan due to run out on May 31, Indian media are speculating the Fijian captain will follow Williams to Mumbai City.
Reports say Mohun Bagan are anxious to retain Krishna for at least one more ISL season but the player is turning down offers.
Reports have speculated that Krishna’s contract value has been reduced by a difficult season in which he scored only six goals in 18 appearances and suffered a hamstring injury.
An Instagram post from Krishna hinted at a move.
Meanwhile, Mohun Bagan have been scouting for striker replacements.
One possible target 32-year-old Serbian international striker Aleksandar Prijovic who plays for A-League club Western United.
Williams and Krishna, now both 34, left the Phoenix for India in time for the 2019-20 ISL season.
During their spells with Mohun Bagan, Krishna has scored 36 goals and made 18 assists in 60 appearances.
Strike partner Williams has scored 17 goals and made eight assists in 55 games.
Retirement remains an option for Krishna who has had a successful career that’s taken him from Fiji club Labasa in 2006 to become one of Oceania’s most prolific goalscorers. He’s among the five top goalscorers in the ISL since its inception in 2014.
After five years with Waitakere United — where he scored 65 goals in 75 appearances — he joined Auckland City and soon won a professional contract with the Phoenix.
Considered the best Fijian footballer ever, Krishna’s place in the game’s history is assured. He was named an Oceania Football Confederation ambassador last year and he’ll remain a fans’ favourite at the Phoenix for whom he scored 65 goals in 122 appearances.
He captained Fiji at the FIFA Oceania World Cup qualifying tournament in Qatar in March.
